Katie’s Komets is a member of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association.  We practice locally once a week (twice for varsity), and the games are at travel team locations.  The most common locations are Baltimore, New Jersey, New York, and of course our own hosting location at the Carousel House in Philadelphia for home games.  However, there are teams across the United States, see this link. Our sponsors help to defray most, if not all of the travel costs.

Recipe for Wheelchair Basketball: Take a blender; put in a full box of the speed, strategy, and finesse of basketball; throw in two heaping handfuls of bumper cars; add a quarter cup of demolition derby; then just a pinch of enduro racing crash and burn.  Blend well, and you pour out Wheelchair Basketball.

You get a fast, fun game where the kids search the limits of physics.  Several find that on the other side of the limit, (Limit = centrifugal force + center of gravity) …….is the floor.  But it’s all good, unless you are a slow referee without shin guards.

The intensity is increased with the age group / level, from the introduction to the sport at Novice on through to the high speed antics of the Varsity.  Come, join, play, if you don’t enjoy the experience you’ll get your registration money back, oh, right … it’s free anyway.
